Why is the Roman Invasion of Britain?

I don't know about romantic. The 'roses' bit arises from the fact that until very recently scholars were all clically trained (certainly when I was at school you needed 'O' level Latin to get into Oxford or Cambridge). Rome was seen as the epitome of civilisation. Much architecture, certainly in the late 18th and 19th century, was based on Roman models - look at many 19th century Town Halls in English cities, or, indeed, the American Capitol etc. 'Ancient Britons' were civilised - it is the Romans who called them 'barbarians, but they saw everyone who was not Roman as such, and as someone has already said, history is written by the victors. The reasons the Romans invaded is two fold. Julius Caesar's two abortive invasions were designed to stop support being given from Britain to the Gauls who he was in process of subduing. The successful invasion by Claudius was designed to support his tottering regime. Whether they did more harm than good is a matter of sheer conjecture. I believe that the effect was far less long lasting as has been made out in the past. Our culture owes far more to the later Anglo-Saxon, Danish and Norman invasions. We don;t even speak a Romance language as do the French, Spanish, Portuguese. Italians and Romanians. At least, Roman remains give Tony Robertson and Time Team something to get excited about!.
